• Encouraging news from the Legislature today that would help people without a valid license get to work and maintain their household.

• North Carolina has traditionally offered no relief to people who have had their license or driving privileges revoked or suspended.

• There has not been any type of work related privileges for those poor souls with pending charges of Driving While License Revoked or Suspended.

• The Legislature has tentatively approved a manner in which people who have suspensions or revocations may be eligible to obtain a Limited Privilege for work.

• Traditionally only people charged and convicted of DWI's, DUI's or Impaired Driving offenses have had the ability to secure driving privileges.

• DUI related licenses require compliance with several regulations, one of which is that the accused must have had a valid license to begin with.

The law is presently PROPOSED and has not yet been passed by the Senate and the Governor of North Carolina.  It is extremely encouraging.

For those who are experiencing problems with the license, due to unpaid tickets, administrative action or other reasons, there are a few simple rules to follow:

1.  Do NOT pay off old citations without first speaking to an experienced attorney.  It is common for the Division of Motor Vehicles to advise people to pay off old tickets, issue a license and then IMMEDIATELY SUSPEND THE LICENSE.

2.  "Suspended" and "Revoked" mean the same thing.

3.  The North Carolina Department of Transporation Division of Motor Vehicles can suspend or revoke a person's ability to drive within the state, EVEN IF THEY HAVE NEVER HAD A VALID LICENSE.

4.  If a license is in a period of revocation or suspension, paying off tickets can have a cumulative effect.  It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to assess a driving record before taking any form of action.

5.  Prior to visiting DMV or attempting to seek out a reinstatement hearing, you should speak to an experienced attorney.
